Political Blogging Panel Hate them or love them, blogs are here to stay. Blogs are rapidly changing the political landscape. A respected and trusted media outlet, blogs are not only providing information but are also making quite the impact. The "fifth estate" is changing political discourse, the news cycle, and voters' participation. As citizen journalists question the integrity of the news gathering process, it is interesting to note the results of a survey which revealed that 61 percent of respondents found blogs to be more honest than other media outlets. With a wide array of bloggers, an engaging panel discussion is sure to ensue on the benefits of political blogging. GSPM Will Host President Alvaro Colom of Guatemala Tuesday, April 29, 2008 11:30 a.m. (audience must be seated by 11:00 a.m.) Jack Morton Auditorium, 805 21st St., NW, Washington, DC During his first official visit to the U.S. since taking office in January, newly seated Guatemalan president Alvao Colom Caballeros will speak on immigration and trade. A leading proponent of peace, development, and social democratic ideals, Colom is founder and leader of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (National Union of Hope), the largest political party in Guatemala’s history, with more 75,000 members. Colom earned notoriety as a peacemaker when he was named executive director of the National Peace Foundation, FONAPAZ, in 1991. During his tenure he focused his efforts on social reconciliation and development in areas of Guatemala that were most affected by the armed conflict of the 1980s. The United States excels at online campaigning and advocacy - or put another way raising money and making noise online. Does this really matter when, come Election Day, those in power turn off the tools of interactivity? Can citizens really have a voice online and meet public challenges if we haven't developed an online listening infrastructure at all levels of governance and community?
