Council on American Politics

Garry South
Senior Political Advisor, Governor Gray Davis (D-CA)

Garry South has been called the “mastermind behind Governor Gray Davis’ come-from-behind victory” in 1998, the election that gave California its first Democratic Governor in 20 years. For his achievement, Garry was named the 1999 AAPC Campaign Manager of the Year. He now serves as Senior Political Advisor to the Governor, and has worked as lead strategist on several ballot initiatives. He was an advisor to Al Gore’s California presidential campaign, the manager of Davis’ successful race for Lieutenant Governor, and was Chief of Staff to Davis in that office. Before moving to California, Garry served as Communications Director for Ohio Governor Richard Celeste and Vice President for Political Communications for the National Association of Realtors. Garry was Special Assistant to US Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland during the Carter Administration, and served as Public Information Director for the Legislature of Montana, his home state.
