The Honorable Charles T. Manatt

Chuck Manatt served as U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic
from 1999-2001. In addition to co-founding and chairing the law
firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips since 1965, and co-founding and
chairing the First Los Angeles Bank from 1973 through 1989, Chuck
has long been involved in the democracy movement. Ambassador Manatt
served as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1981
to 1985. He was the founding Chairman of the National Democratic
Institute for International Affairs. He also served as Vice Chairman
of the National Endowment for Democracy, Chairman of the International
Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), and served on the board
of directors of the Center for International Private Enterprise
and the Center for Democracy.
He has been actively involved in numerous community and institution-building
activities. He is a trustee of the Mayo Clinic Foundation, the Greater
Washington, D.C. Board of Trade, the Hugh OBrien Youth Foundations,
and was formerly a trustee of the National Symphony Orchestra at
the John F. Kennedy for the Performing Arts. Ambassador Manatt continues
his service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the George Washington
University and is also on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State
University Foundation
Ambassador Manatt received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa
State University in 1958 before receiving his J.D. from GW in 1962.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves in the
Quartermaster Corps and the Judge Advocate Generals Corps.
