Vice President of Federal Relations, AT&T
Rodney A. Smith (B.A. University of Georgia, M.A. the Johns Hopkins University) is the Vice President of Federal Relations for AT&T. He is also Executive Director of the AT&T Federal Political Action Committee, the nation’s largest corporate PAC. Mr. Smith has been an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) at the George Washington University since 2003 teaching classes in Corporate Public Affairs, Managing Government Relations and Telecommunications Policy.
Prior to joining AT&T in 1994, Mr. Smith was an electric industry executive for 13 years, serving as Vice President of Public Affairs for two Fortune 500 energy companies. He served as the news spokesman for both firms and played a substantial role in the passage of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and the Clean Air Act Amendments under Presidents Reagan and Bush.
Mr. Smith had a lengthy career as an award winning journalist and as the host of a weekly radio program on Virginia politics. He also worked for Time Inc. as an editor and reporter at The Washington Star, one of the nation’s most respected afternoon newspapers until it ceased publishing in 1981. Prior to entering journalism, Mr. Smith served three years on Capitol Hill as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Communications Director for a senior Member of Congress. In this capacity, he acted as the news spokesman for the Watergate proceedings as well as the congressional hearings and subsequent Army court martial involving the My Lai massacre.
