Brian P. Hawkinson

Brian P. Hawkinson serves the corporate public affairs community in two capacities: as director of Management Consulting for the Washington D.C.-based Public Affairs Council; and, as executive director of the Foundation for Public Affairs. The Public Affairs Council is the leading professional association for public affairs executives. It provides information, training and other resources to its member organizations and their employees to support their effective participation in government, community and public relations activities at all levels.

The Council's Consulting Services advance the field of public affairs through collecting and analyzing data, assessing best practices, and providing professional assistance to member organizations in the areas of strategic planning and management, organizational structure, performance measurement and evaluation.

The Foundation for Public Affairs, a 501(c)3 research and education entity affiliated with the Public Affairs Council, conducts and supports research on emerging issues and important trends that affect the practice of public affairs and the ability of organizations to thrive in a dynamic business environment.

Before joining the Council in 1996, Mr. Hawkinson spent nine years in external relations positions with United Way of America, the national trade and professional association serving community-based United Way organizations. His tenure included three years as director of National Corporate Relations.

Mr. Hawkinson's professional career also encompasses production accounting and logistics management positions in the oil and gas industry with Aminoil USA and Phillips Petroleum Co., as well as mortgage banking with North American Mortgage Company. Prior to his work in the private section, he spent found years in military service as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

He has authored numerous articles for trade and professional magazines around the world and is a frequent speaker on public affairs management issues.

A native Texan, Mr. Hawkinson holds a BBA degree from James Madison University and an MBA from the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. He and his wife Deborah reside with their two children in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
