Peter Fenn

Professorial Lecturer - Campaign Advertisement/Promotion
(PMGT 241)
President, Fenn Communications

Fenn Communications Group is one of the nation’s premier political and public affairs media firms. They have worked in over 300 campaigns, from President to Mayor, and represented a number of Fortune 500 companies.

Increasingly, Fenn Communications Group has been assisting clients such as Lockheed-Martin, Purdue Pharma, 3M, General Motors, The National Association of Realtors, and the Humane Society of the U.S to provide strategic communications advice and produce image and issue advertising.

Since its founding in 1983, Fenn Communications Group has worked in numerous political campaigns, electing more Democratic members of the House of Representatives than any other media firm.  The firm’s clients have included Geraldine Ferraro, Paul Simon, David Bonior, Dave Obey and Nita Lowey.

In 1996 and 1998, Fenn & King was chosen as the lead media firm for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, producing ads that helped win back seats for the Democrats.  In campaign 2000, Peter Fenn was an adviser to Gore for President and served as a surrogate spokesperson on cable news programs.  He performed the same role in 2004 for the Kerry for President Campaign.  In 2006, the firm helped pick up five House seats and two Senate seats.

Prior to forming the firm, Mr. Fenn was the first Executive Director of the political action committee Democrats for the 80’s, founded by Pamela Harriman and then Governor Bill Clinton.  Mr. Fenn also served on the staff of the Senate Intelligence Committee and as Washington Chief of Staff for Senator Frank Church.  In 1983, Mr. Fenn founded and was the first Executive Director of the Center for Responsive Politics.

Mr. Fenn has consulted overseas for the Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy.  He has produced television programs in Russia, Bosnia, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic and consulted abroad for political parties and candidates in such countries as South Africa, Mozambique, Romania, Latvia, Colombia, Northern Ireland, and Hungary.

His writing and producing have earned him “Pollie” awards from the American Association of Political Consultants, Telly Awards, Vision Awards, Silver Microphone Awards for radio, and the Direct Marketing Association Award for Best Direct Mail in the Presidential Campaign for Senator Paul Simon.  Mr. Fenn was also selected by Campaigns & Elections Magazine as a “Rising Star” as a political media consultant and as a “Mover and Shaker” in 1995.

Mr. Fenn has a B.A. from Macalester College, where he was President of the Alumni Association and where he is currently a Trustee. He also earned a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California.  He teaches courses in Presidential Politics, Strategy and Message as well as Campaign Advertising at George Washington’s Graduate School of Political Management.  Mr. Fenn appears frequently as a TV commentator on the major networks and on CNN, FOX News, CNBC, and MSNBC.  He has also served as a regular substitute co-host for Paul Begala on Equal Time with Oliver North and co-hosted CNN’s Crossfire and Spin Room.  He now has a regular show with Pat Buchanan on Saturday on MSNBC.
