GW VIRGINIA CAMPUS ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP

Associate Vice President for Academic Planning Craig Linebaugh Appointed Chief Academic Operating Officer

WASHINGTON - The George Washington University has named GW's Associate Vice President for Academic Planning Craig Linebaugh the chief academic operating officer of the University's Virginia Campus.  Linebaugh assumed his responsibility for the academic operations at the Virginia Campus on July 31, 2006.

In his new role, Linebaugh will develop a strategic academic plan for the Virginia Campus.  He will collaborate with Roger Whitaker, dean of GW's College of Professional Studies, who is responsible for academic programming at all of the University's off-campus locations and with Elliot Hirshman, chief research officer, who will work on integrating research projects at the Virginia Campus into the overall strategic research plan for GW.

"The experience and expertise that Craig Linebaugh has gained over nearly 10 years as an associate vice president in academic affairs will serve the Virginia Campus well," said Donald R. Lehman, executive vice president for academic affairs. "Working with College of Professional Studies Dean Roger Whitaker and the other academic deans, Virginia Campus staff, and Chief Research Officer Elliot Hirshman, I expect that Craig will lead us into an exciting new phase of growth at the Virginia Campus."

Arriving at GW in September 1976, Linebaugh has held dual appointments in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences as professor of speech and hearing science and in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences as a research professor of medicine.  Linebaugh's areas of research include speech and language disorders related to stroke and neuromuscular disease and rehabilitation of neurologic communication disorders.  He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and has been involved with many projects sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Linebaugh served as chair of GW's Department of Speech and Hearing Science from 1986 to 1997, and in 1997 was appointed associate vice president for academic planning.  Linebaugh received a Ph.D. ('76) and a M.A. ('74) degree from Temple University, and a B.A. degree from Lebanon Valley College in 1970.

"I look forward to bringing GW's intellectual power and our commitment to economic development and service to the various sectors of this vibrant region of Loudoun and western Fairfax Counties," said Linebaugh.   "Building partnerships that will produce innovative educational and research endeavors at the Virginia Campus is one of my top priorities."

The George Washington University Virginia Campus is the region's fastest-growing research and technology campus with graduate degree programs and centers of excellence focusing on transportation safety and security, professional and executive education, and information technology and telecommunications.  The 15 year-old, 95-acre campus is located in Ashburn, Virginia, near the Dulles technology corridor.
