The Skirmish. 1964. 5x17.25. Deep-bite etching in color.

This print evolved from the re-worked plate for the similar image, "The Battle" (1963). "The Skirmish" is associated with the Florentine cassone panels of the late fifteenth century and with the painted battle scenes of Paolo Uccello. The plate for this print was purchased by the eminent collector Lessing J. Rosenwald, who eventually donated it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Signed and numbered in pencil. Edition of 30.
