The Challenger Disaster.

In 1986, the U.S. Senate jointly with NASA decided to establish a competition for an oval, medallion-like mural honoring the dead astronauts. It was to hang in the Brumidi Corridor of the U.S. Senate. Out of hundreds of entries the three finalists were Chuck Schmidt of Philadelphia, and William Woodward and Frank Wright of Washington, DC. Chuck Schmidt's entry was the final choice of the jury. Wright's proposal, now in the possesion of the artist, included Grissom, Chaffee and White who died in an earlier space launch attempt. The slogan on the ribbon below "Go at Throttle Up" was the slogan of the astronauts at the time of the succesive launches, according to Senator John Glenn.
