Washington City from the Capitol Dome in 1861. 1995-1996. 42x84.

This panoramic view of Washington City is based on images directed by B.B. French, architect of the capitol. In the summer of 1861 the wetplate photos were taken on the Senate roof adjacent to the new Capitol Dome which was under construction. This was the time of the first Bull Run rout which galvanized the Union into action. The artist was permitted to take pictures from the Senate roof which he coordinated with historic photos, stereocards, and Harper's woodcuts to bring this view to life.
