The Battle of Nashville December 14, 1864. 1994. 36x60.

The pivotal, devastating Battle of Nashville is the subject of a commissioned painting which the artist hopes will eventually become a large Limited Edition offset lithograph. The painting consists of combined incidents which tell the story of the Southern defeat and its aftermath. From the left, the Union Cavalry gallops in, while General George Thomas and his staff assess the defeat. The slaughter continues in the middle ground, while to the right are strewn the dead and dying near barricades of gabions. Actual Civil War images were brought together with invented action based on the cinema and photos from 1940's-era magazines. Many of the figures, both dead and alive, were the artist's students at G.W.U. such as Will Fleishell now a master picture engraver at the Bureau of Engraving, and Chris Madden who posed for General George Thomas and some of the dead and dying rebels.
