Watchfires in the Evening Dews & Damps. 1993. 20x38.

The encampment of the Union Army on December 14, 1864, awaiting Hood's final assault and the commencement of the Battle of Nashville. The weather was so cold and the ground so icy that General George Thomas was slow in launching his attack. Furious about the delay, Grant decided to proceed to City Point, Virginia to cashier Thomas and replace him with General John Logan. However the weather changed, Thomas' army proceeded into battle and virtually destroyed Hood's Army of the Tennessee. This is considered one of the greatest Union victories. The artist chose to adapt an authentic image of the prelude to battle by George Barnard into a scene of dusk with soldiers shivering around meagre fires, sutlers and guards.
