City Point in 1864. 1997. 40x40.

City Point, Virginia was the great supply depot of the Union Army in the latter part of the war, and played a significant role in the fall of Petersburg. In 1864 there was a massive explosion caused by saboteurs which almost killed Grant himself. This painting is an effort to recreate its appearance in the aftermath with small scenes of soldier life. City Point, on the James River, ten miles northeast of Petersburg virtually went out of existence when the war was over.
