Different "codecs" for different "compressors"

There are many "codecs" you can download and install that will add different "compressors" to your PC. Good codecs/compressors ensure high quality recordings and small file sizes, but most are more complicated to use then the default "Microsoft Video 1". Below are a few suggestions for advanced users. (Download the "codec", and double click on it to install the compressor (which will then appear in Options, Video Options).)

CamStudio Lossless Codec

  1. Free, from the creators of CamStudio. Link to download codec is in the middle of the page, just under the link for CamStudio.
  2. Does not work on all PCs.

Xvid Open Source Codec

  1. Free, high quality, small files, but on some computers it creates audio sync problems (the audio and video do not match up).
  2. Another problem is that sometimes the Xvid "status" windows appears and blocks the program. If so, go to Options, Video Options, Configure, Other Options, and uncheck "Display encoding status".
  3. The width and hight of the "region" you select when recording with CamStudio using Xvid must be divisible by 2. If not, you will receive an "Error recording AVI file..." mesage.
  4. When using the Xvid compressor you usually do not need to change the "Hardware Acceleration" settings on your PC.
  5. AVI files made with Xvid often will not play in the CamStudio player, but will play in others players (just click directly on the avi file that has been created).

Divx Codec

  1. High quality, small files. Free 15-day trail, but then paid for some features.
