"The Three Sisters" is a relatively unknown Grimm's Tale which was published in the 1812 edition of the Grimm's Children's and Household Tales. It was later omitted because Jacob Grimm felt that it was not really from the oral tradition. The source of the tale was actually Johann Karl August Musäus's "Die Bücher der Chronika der drei Schwestern" in Volksmärchen der Deutschen which was published in 1782. The tale which is tale type 552 in the Aarne Thompson index is about three sisters whose father marries them off to a bear, eagle, and whale respectively in order to spare his life. The three sisters are then later saved by their brother who saves and marries the sister of the three animals and breaks the spell.
