MELLON FOUNDATION
FELLOWSHIPS IN THE HUMANITIES

 

PURPOSE
To encourage well-qualified students to prepare for careers of humanistic teaching and scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be citizens of the U.S. or Canada whose "promise for teaching and scholarship can be attested to as outstanding by a faculty sponsor." The Mellon Foundation encourages those persons who "have a large vision of both teaching and learning and who combine a capacity to communicate with strong performance in their chosen fields."

LENGTH OF AWARD
One year, non-renewable.

NUMBER AND AMOUNT OF AWARDS
85 Fellowships will be awarded in the 2005 competition. A stipend of $17,500 plus tuition and fees will be awarded to each recipient. After the first year, the graduate student will be expected to cover their own full tuition and fees.

CONDITIONS
Mellon Fellows may use their awards at the graduate school of their choice in the U.S. or Canada.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested students should consult with the Office Of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships early in the fall semester to obtain the current Mellon brochure which details the procedure on how to obtain the application.

Upon request, the Wilson Foundation, which administers the program, will then send application forms directly to you. Applicants must take the GRE, written or computer-based, by November 3, 2004. Results are to be directed to GRE Code 1491, Mellon Fellowships in Humanities.

DEADLINES
Requests for an application must be made before
12 November 2004 and completed applications are due by 1 December 2004.

MELLON FOUNDATION SELECTION
The Mellon Foundation will make a preliminary elimination on the basis of submitted materials. Nominees will then be invited to a personal interview, scheduled in the first week of March. Following the interviews, Regional Committees will recommend Fellowship finalists to the Final Selection Committee. Fellowship awards will be announced during the first week of April 2004.
