GW / McNair Fellowships

McNair Applicants

Students who were McNair Fellows in their undergraduate programs at other universities who apply and are accepted to a graduate program at George Washington receive special consideration for the following merit-based awards:

  • Stipend of $15,000 in addition to
    • Full-tuition or
    • Half-tuition

Two awards are available each year.  Master’s recipients may hold the fellowship for two years; doctoral recipients may hold the fellowship for three years.  It is expected that the Fellow’s school at GW award a Graduate Assistantship – teaching, research or administrative – for two additional years.  McNair applicants will also be considered for lesser awards from academic departments or schools at GW.

GW Internal Process

One the GW Graduate Admissions webpage there is a section called McNair Fee Waiver Application. The student may fill out this form and follow the directions to get an admission application fee waiver.

Schools/departments must recommend McNair applicants to their programs for the awards. A full photocopy of the applicant's file should be forwarded to the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships with a request for a fellowship for the applicant.

In addition to the program recommending the student, the student must also apply for the GW/McNair Fellowship. Students should click here to download an application.

The deadline for the requests is 22 February 2008. Awards will be made by 8 March 2008. After this date, requests will be accepted if funds are still available.
