PURPOSE
This graduate fellowship program aims to develop
and/or strengthen the professional capabilities of Fellows who will return to
their countries of origin to apply those skills learned through their formal
education at The George Washington University. The Program is intended for
students who will be future leaders in their fields in their home countries.

AWARD
Ten Graduate Fellowships, which will cover
full tuition and credit hour fees, will be awarded for 2008-09. The grantee is
to provide funds from other sources for books, living, and other expenses,
equivalent to a minimum of $18,130 for 12 months, and must provide
certification of this support. A Fellowship is renewable each year for a
cumulative maximum of three years for Master’s candidates and up to five years
for doctoral candidates. A grantee must submit renewal materials for the Fellowship each year;
renewal is contingent upon the grantee's grades (GPA of 3.3 or better). The
Fellowship is valid for one degree only. Fellowships are for the fall and
spring semesters. Awards for the summer sessions are by petition only and
subject to available funding.

Fellowships are awarded to highly qualified full-time graduate
degree program students who have gained admission to the University.
Students need to apply for admission separately to the Admissions Office
of the respective school. No Fellowship applicants will be considered who
have not completed the application for the admissions process, including
payment of their application fee. Fellows may have a J-1 or an F-1 visa. As part of the admissions process,
applicants must have passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) with a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based exam, 250 on the
computer-based exam or 100 on the internet based exam, or an IELTS overall
band score of 7.0 (with no individual band below 6.0).

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The following materials must be submitted for
the application to be considered:
A completed application form (If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, this form should be printable. If not, you may send a request that one be sent to you to gradfell@gwu.edu). You must submit this application with the form supplied and it must be completed in English.
For incoming students only, a photocopy of your completed application for admission to a graduate program at The George Washington University must accompany your Global Leadership Program application. Students who do not provide proof of having applied for admission to a GW degree program will not be considered for this fellowship. (Please note that the original application for admission must be sent to the GW program/school to which you are applying.)
An essay which includes your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree, your short- and long-term professional objectives, and, specifically, how obtaining a graduate degree at The George Washington University will be of benefit to your country. Include details on any relevant professional experience, research interests (if Ph.D. candidate), and future plans upon receiving your George Washington University graduate degree. This essay should be typed or printed in English and between 500 and 1,000 words. Additional paper may be attached. You need to submit your essay on the form supplied. The essay must be completed in English. Be sure to print or type and fill in every applicable blank.

DEADLINE
Applications and supporting credentials for fellowships must be received by the
Office of Fellowships by 5 February 2008.
All applications received in the Office of Fellowships will be sent to
applicants' respective schools. Schools and departments will then review the
applications in addition to their graduate applications and forward to the
Office of Fellowships a list of preferred candidates. Incoming students as well
as current students will be considered for Fellowship awards, although
preference will be given to incoming students. Awards will not be announced
until early May 2008.
