PURPOSE
To enable college graduates to study as an affiliated student or to pursue
taught or research courses of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge . In establishing the scholarship, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
hopes to create a network of future leaders from around the world who will
bring new vision and commitment to improving the life circumstances of citizens
in their respective countries. It is anticipated that the Gates Cambridge
Scholars will become leaders in helping to address global problems related to
health, equity, technology, and learning.
ABOUT THE
SCHOLARSHIP
The Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation awards approximately 100 new awards each academic year. These awards cover the full cost of
study at Cambridge for a single person – namely, all approved University and
College tuition fees, a maintenance allowance (which for 2005-06 was £8,400, or
$15,500), a further discretionary allowance for study-related activities (which
for 2005-06 is £2,000, or $3,650), and one return economy airfare between the
UK and the Scholar’s normal country of residence.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants from every country in the world except the United Kingdom are
eligible to apply. Candidates
should normally be under the age of 30.
In general, all candidates must have, or expect to obtain before
beginning study in Cambridge, an Honors Bachelor degree, or its equivalent,
from a recognized university. Some
applicants for admission to study for a PhD may have already have completed,
with high grades, a Master’s program. Applicants from North American universities, or from
universities that adhere to the North American pattern, will be expected to
have excellent transcripts with a high GPA showing evidence of sustained
achievement in study, together with outstanding academic references.

In order to apply for a
Gates Cambridge Scholarship, students must apply for admission to the University
of Cambridge and submit all applicable forms in the application that reference
consideration for financial assistance.
The Gates Cambridge Trust takes advice from the academic committees in
Cambridge responsible for determining admission to the University about the
respective merits of applicants.
On the basis of that advice, applicants short-listed for a Gates
Cambridge Scholarship will be invited to an interview.
