FULBRIGHT-HAYS DOCTORAL DISSERTATION
RESEARCH ABROAD PROGRAM
PURPOSE
The Fulbright-Hays
Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program provides grants to colleges
and universities to fund individual doctoral students to conduct research
in other countries in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods
of 6 to 12 months. While this program does not fund proposals focusing
on Western European topics, travel to Western Europe to consult or research
human or material resources not available in the U.S. on a non-Western
European topic can be funded. Students must apply through their institution
of higher education.
ELIGIBILITY
-
U.S. citizen or a permanent resident
of the U.S.
- Doctoral student in good standing at
an institution of higher education in the United States who, when the fellowship
begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program in modern foreign
languages and area studies at that institution.

Plans on pursuing a teaching career
in the United States upon graduation.

Language proficiency sufficient to communicate
with the people of the host country.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Maintain satisfactory progress in the
conduct of his or her research.

Devote full time to research of the
approved topic.

Not engage in any gainful employment
during the fellowship period.

Remain a student in good standing at
his or her institution.
EXPENSES COVERED BY THE AWARD

Travel expenses to and from the residence
of the fellow and the country or countries of research.

Maintenance and dependents allowances
based on the cost of living in the country or countries of research for
the fellow and his or her dependent(s).

An allowance for research-related expenses
overseas, such as books, copying, tuition and affiliation fees, local travel
and other incidental expenses.

Health and accident insurance premiums.
-
$100.00 administrative fee to applicant
institution.
PROCESS
All Fulbright-Hays applicants must have GW's support and submit their applications
through the University Project Director, Geri Rypkema, Rice Hall 602, 202-994-6822. All applicants
must contact the Project Director for an apppointment to discuss the application process. Applications are due to the U.S. Department of Education by 15 November 2006.
