The
Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation, Inc. is a
national, non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for financial
assistance to gifted and deserving students in the physical sciences and engineering. The ARCS Foundation, Inc. provides a way for business, education,
civic, and social members of a community to combine their interests and efforts
to make a strong contribution to the future and to American youth through the
advancement of scientific education. Each chapter of ARCS determines its method
of fund raising and allocates monies to accredited institutions in the
immediate area. The scholarship programs are administered by the academic
institutions receiving allocations.
At
GW, the Metropolitan Chapter of ARCS gives scholarship funds to the University
which are administered by the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and
Fellowships who then determines which schools will receive priority in a given
year. The monies are then allocated to the appropriate Dean's Offices where
specific academic programs are chosen. Department Chairs then make nominations
of individual students. A student receiving a scholarship must be a citizen of
the United States and have an outstanding scholastic record and proven ability
in a scientific field. Nomination of the student is made by the appropriate GW
Department Chair by invitation only. Nominations may not be solicited by
students and direct applications will not be accepted either at the departmental
level or at the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships for
either the ARCS Scholarships or the ARCS Endowment Fellowships.
*Present
and past ARCS scholars and fellows are commemorated on wall plaques which are displayed
in the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships, Rice Hall 602.
