STUDY ABROAD FELLOWSHIPS

You may contact the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships to apply for or receive information on the following study abroad fellowships.

·        American Councils - variety of fellowships for summer and academic year language study, area studies, research and culture exchanges in certain Middle East, Southeastern Europe and Central Asian countries.

·        Anna Sobol Levy Fellowship - for US citizens under 30 who are recent graduates or enrolled graduate students to attend the University of Jerusalem for one year as visiting graduate students. Candidates should have studied in the fields of military studies, economic geography, international affairs or political science and should aspire to a career in the armed services, diplomatic corps or government.

·        Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study - for one year of advanced language study in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and be at or near an advanced level of the language.

·         Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program - nine-month work/study opportunity in Germany that offers a high-level, in-depth understanding of political, economic, and cultural environment of Germany and the European Union.

·        Center for Arabic Study Abroad - for U.S. student who have completed 2-3 years of college Arabic and willing to participate fully in an intensive language program and be opne to living in a different culture

·        Chateaubriand Fellowships in the Humanities/Social Sciences and Science - Set up by the French Embassy in the United States. Every year it allows non-French citizens who are doctoral candidates to perform research at a French institution for up to twelve months.

·        Critical Language Scholarships - U.S. citizens who are undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D. students and recent graduates receive funding to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. Languages of study for the 2007 competition were Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu, Chinese, Korean, Persian, and Russian.

·        DAAD/German Academic Exchange Service - Variety of awards for German language study, independent research and graduate study in Germany. German language skills not necessary for all awards. Fellowships and grants available for graduate students, PhDs and postdocs for periods ranging from four months to one academic year.

·        Friends of Peterhouse Bursary for Overseas Affiliated Students and for Overseas Graduate Students - intended to assist towards cost of study at Peterhouse College, Cambridge University in the UK.

·        Fulbright Grants for Graduate Study Abroad - for U.S. seniors, graduate or professional students, or alumni.

·        Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program - provides grants to colleges and universities to fund doctoral students in conducting research in other countries.

·        The Gates Cambridge Scholarships - To enable college graduates to study as an affiliated student or to pursue taught or research courses of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. Applicants from every country in the world except the UK are eligible to apply.

·        German Chancellor Scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation - enabling prospective leaders from the U.S.A. in the academic, economic, and political fields to carry out research projects of their own choice in Germany.

·        Helene Gladstone Williams Fellowships - offers stipends of up to $5,000 to be used for advanced study in a diversity of subjects that relate to English-speaking traditions in locales other than, or in addition to, the United States. Applicants must have residential ties with the Washington metropolitan area, and must hold at least a bachelor's degree by the time their study period begins.

·        Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Research Scholarships - for students who are under the age of 35 and have a college degree to study and perform research at a Japanese university. Endorsement from the applicant's embassy is required.

·        Luce Scholars Program for Professional Placement in an Asian Country - for U.S. students who have not concentrated in Asian studies or traveled extensively in Asia, and are no more than 29 years old when the scholarship begins.

·        National Flagship Language Program - to help US students achieve professional levels of competency in languages vital to US national security interests. NFLP offers training full-time one to two-year prgrams for post-baccalaureate students that include US campus-based programs and overseas immersion programs in Arabic, Mandarin, Urdu, Korean, Persian, Farsi and Russian.

·        National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships - for graduate specialization in area and language study or for adding an important international dimension to one's graduate education

·        Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme, United Kingdom - Set up by the U.K. Secretary of State for Education and Science to provide awards for overseas students who wish to undertake full-time postgraduate research in the U.K. Each award will cover the difference between the tuition fee for a home (U.K.) postgraduate student and the fee payable by an overseas postgraduate student.

·        Peterhouse - Cambridge Research Studentships - intended to assist PhD candidates from overseas at Peterhouse College, Cambridge University in the UK.

·        Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships - promotes international understanding as the scholars are expected to serve as ambassadors of goodwill during the term of their scholarships. Three types of scholarships are currently available: academic-year, multi-year, and cultural. Deadlines may vary. Contact your local Rotary Club in your area of residence for application materials and deadline information.

·        Russian National Flagship Program - the Stateside Russian Flagship Program funds US-based intensive Russian language study, and the Overseas Russian Flagship Program funds advanced immersion language study at St. Petersburg State University.

·        School of Humanities Research Studentships, King's College London - assist students of excellent academic caliber to continue their training beyond a first or masters degree and to attract high quality applicants to undertake or continue research MPhil/PhD programmes at King's College London within the School of Humanities.

·        Bender-GW Scholarship at the University of Cambridge - for GW graduating seniors, third-year law students, or recent GW alumni who have also applied for the Rhodes and/or Marshall Scholarship(s).

·          Marshall Scholarships for Graduate or Professional Study at any U.K. University - for U.S. students who are at least college seniors and not yet 26 years old at the time of application.
·         George J. Mitchell Scholarships - endowed by the Government of Ireland for U.S. students who wish to study or conduct research at institutions of higher learning including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland.
·        Rhodes Scholarships for Graduate or Professional Study at Oxford University - for U.S. students who are at least college seniors and not yet 25 years old at the time of application.
