Graduate School of Education and Human Development

Students in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) may apply for merit-based fellowships, assistantships and tuition reduction awards. Students interested in applying for fellowships or assistantships must submit a completed application for admission by January 15. Applicants to on-campus GSEHD programs who apply online have the opportunity to apply for merit-based tuition support as part of the GW Graduate Application. Continuing students who wish to apply for support may use the online application on the GSEHD website. Some departments also have tuition awards and stipends available through funded projects. Contact your department for further information on these specialized sources of aid.

GSEHD students may apply for cooperative education opportunities; in the past, students have obtained positions as training specialists, job coaches, public programmers, research assistants, counselors, and teachers. If students would like more information about the Cooperative Education Program, they can either go to the Career Center, or call directly at (202) 994-6495.

DOCTORAL STUDENTS

• Graduate Assistantships – include a stipend, salary, and tuition award.
• Half-Tuition Awards for Full-time and Part-time Students – Merit-based.
• Dean's Scholars – Tuition awards for outstanding newly admitted full-time students. Provides 18 credit hours of tuition support and a $1,000 stipend. Students are nominated by department faculty based on merit.

FELLOWSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENDOWED FUNDS

• The Angeline E. Anderson Scholarship Fund - partial tuition award used to support a full- or part-time masters student with financial need who plans a teaching career in U.S. schools.
• The Sylven Seid Beck Endowment for Elementary Education – partial tuition award for masters students in the elementary teacher education program. Contact the Elementary Education Program Director (202) 994-9084.
• The John & Claudia Boswell Faculty Scholarship Fund – partial tuition award for any GSEHD masters or doctoral student.
• The Marcella Brenner Endowment for Museum Education – provides three $1,000 cash awards during the internship year for masters degree students in the Museum Education program. Contact the Museum Education Program Director (202) 994-4950.
• The Columbian Women Scholarship in Education – partial tuition award for a current GSEHD student with a minimum 3.5 GPA, who has completed 15 credit hours and who has financial need.
• The Vincent De Angelis Scholarship Fund – partial tuition award for a full- or part-time masters or doctoral student. Preference is given to those who have earned an undergraduate degree in physical education.
• The Eaves-Carden Scholarship Fund – partial tuition award for a student pursuing a graduate degree with an emphasis on elementary school administration.

• The Feldman Museum Education Fellowships – two $2,500 fellowships for Museum Education students each year.
• The Griffith Family Scholarship Fund – need-based support for students planning a career in education. This fund typically provides for 4.5 credit hours in both the fall and the spring.
• The Corey Hansen Scholarship Ebdowment – two $5,000 scholarships awarded annually to secondary education students who exemplify Dr. Hansen's values and dedication to the field of teaching an administration.
• The James Harold Fox Scholarship Fund - partial tuition award for a full- or part-time educator planning a career in public or private school teaching. Students with physical disabilities and financial need are given preference.
• The Mary Hatwood Futrell Scholarship Fund – partial tuition award for full- or part-time students with modest resources pursuing or continuing careers as classroom teachers or counselors.
• Holmes Scholar Program – GSEHD invites qualified, first-year doctoral students to apply for national Holmes Scholar Awards. The awards include travel to the annual Holmes Scholars meeting, Holmes Scholar Summer Institute, and either the national AERA or AACTE meeting.
• The Mildred Green Scholarship Fund – partial tuition award or stipend to recognize an educator with great potential.
• The Mary-Margaret Cashell Kellogg Scholarship – partial tuition award for a full- or part-time master's or doctoral student with financial need.
• The Dr. Dorothy A. Moore Graduate Scholarship Endowment for International Education – merit-based scholarships for GSEHD students pursuing degrees in international education.
• The Vest Family Fellowship Fund – partial tuition award for a masters or doctoral student who is preparing for, or engaged in, a career in administration, teaching, or counseling in public schools.
• The Ruth Ann Parker Wells Scholarship – typically provides one award for three credit hours in both fall and spring.
• The Ruth Ann Parker Wells and David Leonard Wells Endowment Scholarship Fund- scholarships within the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the discretion of the Dean.
• Conference Presentation Travel Grants – grants available for those students invited to present at a national or international conference related to their academic area or dissertation research (separate application required - contact the Office of Fellowships, (202) 994-6822)
• Global Leadership Program Fellowships – for international students on J-1 visas from the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and U.S.S.R. successor states. • Phi Delta Gamma Scholarship Fund – must have completed at least nine semester hours of graduate work at GW. Not open every year (separate application required - contact the Office of Fellowships, (202) 994-6822)
• Scottish Rite Endowment Graduate Fellowships – for graduate students affiliated with the Scottish Rite except law and M.D. students (separate application required - contact the Office of Fellowships, (202) 994-6822)
• Scottish Rite Endowment Graduate Public Service Awards – for U.S. citizens who plan a career in government or public service, intend to undertake unpaid public service over the summer, and are enrolled as full-time master's degree candidates in CCAS, ESIA, GSEHD, SBPM, or SEAS.
