The GW Code of Academic Integrity was created with input from students, faculty, librarians and administration, approved by the President of the University and the Board or Trustees and applies to all graduate and undergraduate students, with the exception of two groups that are governed by separate policies: (1) students in the Law School; and (2) students enrolled in the M.D. program of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. A copy of the code is included in the attached Guide to Student Rights and Responsibilities 2008-2009 and is also available on the web.

The Code is promoted and administered by the Academic Integrity Council, made up of both faculty and students. Questions about interpretation or application of the Code should be addressed to the Office of Academic Integrity.

The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) is a resource and networking center that assists faculty and teaching assistants in achieving their full potential as teachers and scholars. CITL provides a number of services to assist GTAs and IAs:

  • One-on-one consultations for GTAs and IAs interested in learning more about teaching or in improving face-to-face and/or on-line teaching skills.
  • A web-based step-by-step guide for planning and designing a new course.
  • Assistance in using statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS).
  • An Instructional Technology Lab to assist in the identification and resolution of introducing technology into a course.
  • Workshops on the use of educational software, particularly with on-line courses.
  • Links to other teaching resources.

The Counseling Center offers services and programs to assist students with personal, social, career, and study problems that can interfere with educational and career goals. Key services offered by the Center include:

  • An online Academic Success Center with a variety of tools and recommendations to help students organize their time, develop effective study techniques, improve their memory, and increase their test-taking abilities.
  • Individualand group counseling to help students understand and cope with issues such as academic problems, motivation, self-esteem, self-direction, anxiety, depression, and loss.
  • A referral service for special services not offered at the Center or for open-ended (versus short-term) counseling needs.
  • Academic Success Workshops on a variety of topics, including test-taking, stress management, organizational skills and note taking are scheduled throughout the semester.
  • Academic Progress Groups offering problem-solving and support for students who are unhappy with their motivation and academic achievement at GW.
  • A Peer Tutoring Service, an academic referral service that enables students to hire qualified peer tutors at reasonable rates in all subject areas.
  • Career development services, including career decision workshops and individual career counseling.
  • The Personal Development Program, offering access to self-help books, pamphlets, and audio-visual tapes to explore or research personal needs, interests, and psychological and health issues.

Disability Support Services works with students who may have physical, emotional, and/or learning disabilities to ensure they have access to every opportunity for learning and personal growth. The office also serves as a contact point from which the University community may obtain information and assistance on teaching and aiding disabled students. Gelman Library's Reference Services helps students identify the most appropriate sources for your research, interpret the information in these sources, and locate materials in Gelman Library and elsewhere. Reference assistance is available in a variety of ways:

  • The Reference and Information Desk, located on the first floor, offers walk-in assistance.>
  • Ask-A-Librarian responds to e-mail requests for assistance.
  • Library instruction services are available on an individual and group basis to educate students on the use of library resources.
  • Two online reference sources: the Ready Reference Collection, providing links to general, multidisciplinary, and heavily-used reference sources; and the Research Guides, that contains annotated lists of important information sources, organized both by subject area and for specific GW courses.
  • Scheduled appointments for an individual session with a librarian.
  • The TelephoneInformationCenter can answer basic questions about the library, its catalog and other databases, as well as simple reference questions, referring more complicated questions to other library staff as appropriate.

Through the Circulation/Reserves Services of both Gelman Library (main campus) and Eckles Library (Mount Vernon Campus), faculty can put assigned readings on reserve to ensure easy access for the entire class. This process requires faculty to submit a Course Registration form for each course that will have reserve readings, and a Course Reserve Request form for each new item they wish placed on reserve. GTAs can place individual items on reserve provided the faculty member has listed them on the Course Registration form as the teaching assistant for that course. The GW Muticultural Student Services Center (MSSC) provides a wide-range of services, educational programming, and social and cultural activities to enhance the multicultural ideals of cultural heritage, racial understanding, academic excellence, and continuous personal development. MSSC’s activities include student-to-student advising sessions and a Buddy Program that matches new students with continuing students to provide a network of support.

The Writing Center provides peer tutors that work with students, faculty, and staff at all levels of writing ability and at any stage of the writing process, including:

  • Discovering topics and generating ideas
  • Finding and documenting supporting materials
  • Developing and organizing arguments

They provide assistance with all kind of writing projects, including course papers, theses, speeches, and scientific reports.
