THE LUCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

PURPOSE
To provide the experience of living and working in an Asian country to 18 college graduates who might not otherwise become familiar with Asia and Asian culture.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates will be chosen without regard to sex, race, religion, marital status, or need. They must be U.S. citizens, and no more than 29 years of age on 1 September of the year the scholarship begins. Candidates should have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 for their undergraduate work.

Applicants may be graduating seniors, graduate students, alumni, or junior faculty of the nominating university. Candidates may not have had significant exposure to Asia through extensive travel or residence, and their academic background and career plans may NOT include any concentration in Asian affairs. Candidates must possess a clearly defined career interest in a specified field. They must show strong motivation and potential for achievement in their field. Candidates must have excellent academic backgrounds and records of leadership ability either on campus or off. They should possess "more than usual openness to new ideas and a sensitivity to their fellow human beings."

AWARD
Approximately one year, with orientation beginning in late August. Scholars receive a significant monthly stipend from the Luce Foundation through the period of their participation; cost of living increment is provided if necessary. Travel allowances, plus the cost of basic medical and travel insurance, is also included.

NOMINATION
GW can nominate two candidates. Interested persons should contact the Undergraduate Center for National Fellowship Competitions, 714 21st Street, 2nd Floor (next to Lisner Auditorium), early in the Fall semester to discuss eligibility. A preliminary screening to determine GW nominees will occur on campus. GW will forward Nominees applications to the Luce Foundation through the Office of Fellowships in the University Honors Program. The Luce foundation will screen applicants during the winter and 45 finalists will meet with regional Selection Committees in mid-February and early March. Successful candidates will receive notice by mid-March.
