ETL Program - Tech Tip #6

Anti-Virus Software

One of the biggest problems that Internet users face today is the increasing threat of "viruses" (which includes not only viruses, but worms, trojan horses, and the like). If you are a currently registered student or faculty member, you are entitled to use GW's site-licensed Norton Anti-Virus software on the computer that you use for your academic work. We strongly encourage all students and faculty to not only use anti-virus software, but to also remember that live updates need to be run periodically (I recommend weekly, or better) in order to keep the virus definitions current -- there are new "critters" being released often.

Here's how to get it:

Go to the GW Helpdesk's site for anti-virus downloads.

READ ALL THE INFORMATION CAREFULLY! You must first remove existing anti-virus software, and some operating systems require that you first install a service update before Norton can be installed. You are doing this at your own risk, so work carefully and follow the directions.

Select the download(s) appropriate for your system and install the software.

Once installed, reboot your system and run a Live Update to be sure that you have the most recent virus protection available.

Please note that this is a fairly large file to download. Some people with slow internet connections will find that they have to use the option of downloading the file in multiple sections -- if you are in that situation, be sure that all parts of the file are downloaded completely before trying to install the program.

The university, rather than ETL, handles tech support for Norton Anti-virus problems. See the IT Services Helpdesk number [(202) 995-5530, options 1 > 4] if you need assistance with installing this software.
