ETL Program - Tech Tip #3

Obtaining File Transfer Protocol Software

After you have created and set up your Web account, you will need to be able to transfer files back and forth to it. This is done by using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software. There are many different software packages that will do this, but GW has SSH & SFTP (for WIN machines) and FETCH (for MAC machines) available to students at no cost. Click here to download one of those programs.

Please keep in mind that FTP software allows you to connect your local computer to an account on a remote server, then transfer files between the two machines. If you don't first have an account created on the GW server, and configured for supporting a Website (see Tech Tip 2), you won't be able to connect to anything.

When you have installed your SSH & SFTP software, you will need to configure session properties so that you can connect your machine to the remote server -- and move files between the two. Although different FTP software packages may use slightly different terms for the required settings, they all work the same way. The directions specifically for SSH & SFTP can be found at http://helpdesk.gwu.edu/manuals/ibm/ssh3.html
