Registration Deadlines

Students who register for Fall 2009 courses after August 28th, 2009 will enter the late registration period and receive a late fee of $80. New non-degree students need to allow for approximately 3 extra days prior to the registration deadline as they must first obtain a GWID number to register for courses (see Step One below). We strongly recommend that all students not wait until the end of the registration period to register for courses as they may encounter problems using the registration system and subsequently roll over into the late registration period!

Registration Steps

Step One: New non-degree students are required to submit a short online "application" to the GWU Office of University Students (OUS) prior to registering for classes. See: http://www.gwu.edu/~ous/ . Once the online application has been completed and you have been issued a GWID number, return to this site to complete steps 2 - 6 as listed below. Do not complete the registration process on the Office of University Students website. If you are a returning non-degree student or have been formally admitted to the ETL program, proceed directly to Step Two.

Step Two: All ETL students must subscribe to a GWU e-mail address. If you currently have a GWU e-mail account, skip this step and proceed to Step Three. To obtain your account link to: GWU E-mail Account Request Form. Once you have obtained a GW mail account, you may access your account via the web at http://cmail.gwu.edu (Colonial Mail). You can also use Outlook, Pine, IMAP or POP to check mail. For further information on these, please see http://helpdesk.gwu.edu/helpdesk/email/email.html

Step Three: All students must first pre-register for classes by completing one of the following Pre-Registration forms. It is very important that students complete the correct form! If you have any questions about which form applies to you please send an email to etladmin@gwu.edu for assistance.

Students (both degree and non-degree) enrolling in the distance ETL Masters Degree Program or ETL Certificate Programs must complete this form: (form will be posted here on July 17th 2009)

Students enrolled in other GSEHD on-campus programs who would like to enroll in an ETL course must complete the following pre-registration form (note: on campus students will be charged on campus tuition rates for ETL distance courses):(form will be posted here on July 17th 2009)

Step Four: GWU Registration Instructions (GWEB)

Step Five: (textbooks will be posted here on July 17th 2009)

Step Six: Orientation - (Orientation Information will be posted here on September 2nd, 2009) Fall 2009 Orientation Information. The ETL orientation provides information on how to access course materials and use the communications tools that are central to our course delivery system. We allow a few days prior to the beginning of each session for students to become comfortable with their new learning environment. Because BlackBoard materials are not available until just before the beginning of each semester, orientation is scheduled to coincide with BlackBoard availability. You will then be able to go into your BlackBoard (Bb) courses and familiarize yourself with the environment. Course materials shall not, however, be available until the first day of classes. Orientation for the Fall 2009, session is scheduled to begin on September 2nd, 2009. Students typically are not sent course startup information until just before the day that orientation begins. Please check your GW e-mail account at that time. BlackBoard, our courseware delivery system, is opened on the first day of classes. If you have completed registration by that date, you will be sent a reminder that BlackBoard is open. Otherwise, you may logon to BlackBoard by going to http://blackboard.gwu.edu. Please keep in mind that no courses will appear in BlackBoard until the first official day of the semester! For a brief introduction to BlackBoard, using screen shots instead of an actual Bb application, please click here.

Returning students are reminded that they need to complete all of the orientation exercises before the first day of classes. For further information about orientation, students may contact Bill Robie at etltech@gwu.edu 202-994-8607.

Course Drops / Withdrawal and Refund Information
During the registration period (before the end of the second week of classes) students may add or drop courses using GWeb. To access GWeb, go to http://my.gwu.edu and link to "GWeb Information System" (top left of page). Students who drop courses within the first two weeks of class are asked to notify the course professor and etladmin@gwu.edu .

After the second week of classes, students who wish to add or drop a course must complete the following steps:

1 Send  an e-mail to the professor of record requesting permission to withdraw from the course.
2 Send  a copy of this e-mail to the ETL Administrative office at: etladmin@gwu.edu.
3 If the professor approves the withdrawal, the administrative office will send students withdrawal forms to complete and sign.  Be sure the ETL Administrative office  (etladmin@gwu.edu) receives a copy of the approval.

After the first two weeks it is very important for students to notify the professor of record immediately should they stop participating in a course because of associated academic and financial penalties.  A course dropped during the first four weeks of classes will not appear on the student's transcript. A course dropped after the fourth week but before the end of the eighth week will be assigned a notation of W (Authorized Withdrawal). Failure to withdraw by these procedures can result in an extended financial obligation and the recording of a grade of F (Failure) or a notation of Z (Unauthorized Withdrawal).

The deadline for dropping a course without academic penalty is the end of the eighth week of classes in the fall and spring semesters. After the end of the eighth week of classes, dropping a course without academic penalty is only possible after the student presents a petition to the dean and receives written permission.  Contact etladmin@gwu.edu with questions about the appeal process.

Tuition and Billing
See Tuition and Billing Information for refund policy information associated with Course Drops / Withdrawals.
