Academic Standards
A grade point average of 3.0 is required for graduation. Students who receive a grade of "C" in more than 6 credit hours are subject to suspension. Students who receive a grade of "F" must confer with the dean before enrollment for further work.

Incompletes
All incompletes must be requested in writing to the course professor. If the course professor approves the student's request, the student must then complete and fax to the ETl office (fax no. 202-994-2145) the following Incomplete Contract The student will receive an "I" (incomplete) which indicates that a satisfactory explanation has been given to the instructor for the student's failure to complete the required work of the course. An instructor recording a grade of "I" will stipulate a date by which work must be completed. The instructor has the responsibility for changing the grade of I to an appropriate grade upon completion of work or, if work is not completed by the stipulated date, determining whether the grade of I should be changed to "F" or allowed to remain in the record. The grade of "I" remains on the student's record along with the completed grade.

Course Drops / Withdrawals
During the registration period (before the end of the second week of classes) students may add or drop courses using GWeb. Students who drop courses within the first two weeks of class are asked to notify the course professor and etladmin@gwu.edu . After the second week of classes, students who wish to add or drop a course must complete the following steps:

  1. Send  an e-mail to the professor of record requesting permission to withdraw from the course.
  2. Send  a copy of this e-mail to the ETL Administrative office at: etladmin@gwu.edu.
  3. If the professor approves the withdrawal, the administrative office will send students withdrawal forms to complete and sign.  Be sure the ETL Administrative office  (etladmin@gwu.edu) receives a copy of the approval.

After the first two weeks it is very important for students to notify the professor of record immediately should they stop participating in a course because of associated academic and financial penalties.  A course dropped during the first four weeks of classes will not appear on the student's transcript. A course dropped after the fourth week but before the end of the eighth week will be assigned a notation of W (Authorized Withdrawal). Failure to withdraw by these procedures can result in an extended financial obligation and the recording of a grade of F (Failure) or a notation of Z (Unauthorized Withdrawal).

The deadline for dropping a course without academic penalty is the end of the eighth week of classes in the fall and spring semesters. After the end of the eighth week of classes, dropping a course without academic penalty is only possible after the student presents a petition to the dean and receives written permission.  Contact etladmin@gwu.edu with questions about the appeal process.
