Program Overview

Provides broad knowledge of the "systems approach" for designing and managing large-scale engineering systems throughout the life cycle. Topics include elements of systems engineering, methods and standards, architecting, computer tools that support systems and software engineering, trends and directions, and the integrative nature of systems engineering. Case studies and methodologies from NASA, DoD and U.S. corporations are explored.

Doctor of Science

The program of study is individually tailored for each student and designed to provide the student with the capability to perform substantive research.

Masters of Science

The program of study consists of 12 graduate level courses totaling 36 credit hours. Three types of course requirements are included in the curriculum -- common course requirements, focus course requirements, and approved electives. Common course requirements are taken by all students in the EMSE Master's program. Focus course requirements are taken by all students within the area of focus. Approved elective requirements are courses that require the approval of the student's individual academic advisor. These courses are detailed below.

Common Course Requirements

EMSE 212 - The Management of Technical Organizations
EMSE 260 - Survey of Finance and Engineering Economics
EMSE 269 - Elements of Problem Solving and Decision Making for Managers
EMSE 283 - Systems Engineering 1

Focus Course Requirements

EMSE 201 - Quantitative Models in Systems Engineering
EMSE 231 - Program and Project Management
EMSE 284 - Systems Engineering II
EMSE 285 - Systems Analysis and Management
EMSE 297 - Problems in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering

Approved Electives

Total of three approved electives, at least two from the following list:

EMSE 202 - Operations Research Methods
EMSE 218 - Management of Information and Systems Security
EMSE 235 - Systems Thinking and Policy Modeling I
EMSE 250 - Information and Software Engineering
EMSE 273 - Discrete Systems Simulation
EMSE 286 - Applied Enterprise Systems Engineering
EMSE 288 - Technology Issue Analysis

Note: Electives other than those listed above need to be formally approved by the student's advisor
