EMeRG exists to provide emergency medical care to students, faculty, staff, and visitors on GW's Foggy Bottom campus. Our central location in the Marvin Center allows us to respond quickly to anywhere on campus, usually within 5 minutes. We are familiar with the campus and campus buildings within our jurisdiction.
EMeRG is capable of assessing any kind of medical emergency. A few examples of treatments we can provide are bandaging, splinting, providing oxygen, assisting with medications such as the EpiPen®, performing CPR and using an AED. As EMTs, we are trained to handle everything from minor cuts, light illness, and diabetic emergencies to major trauma, childbirth, and cardiac arrest. EMeRG responds either with EMeRG-1 (our quick response vehicle), on bike, or both. For patients that need to go to the hospital and are seriously ill or injured, DC Fire and EMS is called to provide transport by ambulance.
EMeRG strives to be in service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week whenever classes are in session. At times, EMeRG also staffs some special events, such as basketball games and concerts at the Smith Center and other venues.
EMeRG does not and cannot issue legal or judicial violations. EMeRG's responsibility is to provide emergency medical care. Also, EMeRG cannot, by law, share any medical information with anyone except other providers involved in your medical care for that incident, such as DC Fire and EMS or the GW Hospital.
Absolutely not. EMeRG does not share medical reports with UPD or SJS. We only share information with your other medical providers. The only way that we can give out your medical report is if you specifically ask for it or if a court order demands it. If you would like to request a copy of your medical report, please contact the EMeRG Coordinator at EMeRG@gwu.edu.
Currently, all EMeRG members are volunteer undergraduate or graduate students at GW. Regular EMeRG shifts are voluntary, but members may be paid for staffing some special events, as well as for teaching CPR classes (if they are CPR Instructors).
If you are a GW student and either are or about to become an EMT, yes! More information can be found on our Joining EMeRG page.
UPD Officers are dispatched to medical emergencies specifically to ensure that the scene is safe for medical providers, patients, and bystanders (if any are present). University policy requires that UPD provide a presence to ensure the safety of everyone present.
