A Message from the Dean

The Elliott School of International Affairs is fortunate to have a unique location and a fabulous building in the heart of Washington, D.C. Although these are tremendous institutional advantages, the Elliott School is far more than a set of GPS coordinates and physical facilities – as stunning as they may be. The Elliott School is fundamentally a community of people who are dedicated to understanding international affairs and making our world a better place.

Approximately 3,000 members of the Elliott School community are faculty, students, and staff who are based on the GW campus. More than 16,000 members of our community are alumni, based in and around Washington, across the United States, and around the world. In numerical terms alone, alumni comprise more than 80 percent of our total community! They are a vast and vital part of what we are accomplishing locally and what we seek to achieve globally.

At the Elliott School and GW, alumni relations is a two-way street. Or, to put it in 21st century terms, alumni relations is an interactive network. Our alumni contribute to our academic efforts in a multitude of ways: from helping us with student recruitment and professional opportunities to offering programmatic advice and providing critical financial support. At the same time, we are expanding our capacities to engage and support our alumni. We took an important step forward this summer with the creation of a new Elliott School alumni relations position and the arrival of Taylor Bodrie Stilli in this position. Taylor introduces herself and outlines some new alumni relations initiatives elsewhere in this issue of Briefing.

Alumni relations initiatives are top priorities at the Elliott School and GW. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for ways to expand and improve our alumni relations programs.
