Employer Services – ways Career Development can assist you
"Events by GSCD are useful and taught me professional skills. I appreciate that the skills I learned transcend professions and have wide application."
– M.A. international affairs, first year student
As competition for quality candidates continues to grow, reaching the appropriate pool of potential employees efficiently is essential. The graduate programs at the Elliott School of International Affairs provide excellent academic and professional training to students to meet the needs of your organization.
Graduate Student Career Development (GSCD) can help you focus your efforts specifically to those you want to reach, whether by functional area, degree, or other specific criteria. Contact our office via phone (202) 994-3788 or email to learn more.
Employer Site Visit program
Designed as an informational program to help familiarize students with both your organization and the industry in general, site visits also offer students a chance to learn about internship or employment opportunities within your organization. Volunteer commitments are from one to four hours and generally include 10 - 40 students who are hosted at your site.
On-Campus Presentations and Interviews
On-campus presentations, as well as interviews, provide an excellent opportunity for you to meet our students and for students to learn about a variety of positions available at your organization. Presentations are generally one and a half hours in length, include a multimedia presentation, and occur at the Elliott School. In addition, our center has three interview rooms available for your use.
Career Information Panels
Throughout the year, GSCD sponsors career information panels that are generally one and a half hours in length. Ideally, three to five panelists share their perspectives on the career field and their organizations. There is also a question and answer session. Students greatly appreciate the career panel, as it gives them a unique opportunity to receive first hand information regarding various employers as well as receive feedback and suggestions regarding their job search.
Opportunity Knocks Career and Information Fair
Tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 3, 2009 from 3 - 6 p.m., Opportunity Knocks provides a forum for employers to become better acquainted with the professional capabilities of the Elliott School's graduate students and alumni. It also provides our graduate students with an invaluable opportunity to learn more about potential employers. Last year, over 300 students and alumni and more than 70 employers attended.
Mock (practice) Interview program
This event is an opportunity to help current students improve their interviewing skills. Students will meet with employer volunteers and participate in a 45-minute practice interview (30-minute interview with 15 minutes of feedback). Volunteer commitments are for two and a half hour time slots and include an employer networking lunch.
Job Posting
We can assist you in alerting our M.A. candidates and alumni about full-time employment, internship opportunities, and special projects within your organization. We will post them for you free of charge on our career management system. Should you choose to post these positions yourself, learn about our web application Elliott School Career Connection.
Electronic Resume Books
Receive the cover letters and résumés of interested applicants for your positions in one packet. We can collect these documents and send them to you electronically at any time. This effort, along with the cooperation of students in meeting deadlines, has helped the Elliott School both increase the number of companies recruiting on-campus and establish new relationships with companies that would not have otherwise recruited here.
Coaches-in-Residence
The coach-in-residence program is an opportunity for senior-level industry experts to volunteer and work with Elliott School graduate students on career related concerns.
Coaches-in-residence enable students to gain a unique perspective on their chosen career field directly from employers and receive individual feedback on résumés, cover letters, and/or interviewing strategies. The program also provides employer volunteers an opportunity to help prepare Elliott School graduate students for their next career move, identify potential talent for their industry, as well as give back to the Elliott School by aiding graduate students in their career development.
Special Arrangements
Please let us know what your unique recruitment requirements and processes may be. We will discuss how we can partner to help you meet your goals and objectives.
