Study Abroad

Engage the World Around You

"Without a doubt, the only way to really get to know a culture is to live in it. Study abroad has opened my eyes to how a large portion of the world lives. It's best to come without expectations and with an open mind…"
—Sarah, Morocco

Students enroll in the Elliott School of International Affairs because they are interested in understanding and confronting global challenges. While undergraduates examine and wrestle with international issues in the classroom, there is no better way to truly understand and engage the world than to study and experience it firsthand. Study abroad allows students to put theory into practice by spending time outside of the United States, learning about global issues and the people they affect. Study abroad is an invaluable complement to students' academic and professional plans and is often a life-changing experience.

Many Students, Many Places

"Step outside your comfort zone and try something completely new — either where you study or the courses you take. You won't regret it!"
— Cathleen, China

Students may choose from a wide range of study abroad options. Programs vary by location, format and content and offer students very different types of experiences. There are over 250 approved programs, all of which offer students a chance to gain hands-on experience and engage the world around them.

Studying abroad is a wonderful way to improve language skills. It is possible to begin studying a new language while abroad, but students are encouraged to begin language study prior to going overseas. Background in a relevant language serves to enrich students' abroad experiences; it helps them acclimate to the new culture and make the most of their time abroad. Proficiency in a relevant language also increases students' program options, as some programs have language requirements for admission.

Among the numerous study abroad options are four GW-managed programs: GW Latin America, GW England, GW Madrid, and GW Paris. The GW programs offer a variety of courses appropriate for ESIA students at leading institutions in seven countries.

The Study Abroad Process

"Before applying to a study abroad program, make sure your choice is useful in terms of your academic plans."
— Tammy, England

When planning to study abroad, students work closely with the Office for Study Abroad and the Elliott School Office of Academic Advising and Student Services. They might also seek input from professors, who are responsible for approving courses for transfer back to GW. It is never too early to start thinking about study abroad. Students should start by assessing where they stand with academic requirements and by exploring the website of the Office for Study Abroad . They should then attend a General Information Session offered by the office for Study Abroad, after which they may meet with a study abroad advisor. Throughout the process, they should work with their Elliott School academic advisor to ensure that their choice of programs complements their academic plans. The Study Abroad Process Guide for Elliott School Undergraduates P D F icon explains how to determine where abroad coursework will fit into the Elliott School curriculum.

Go Away!

"You will grow in ways you don't understand yet, and it will be wonderful. GDubb will be waiting for you when you return."
— Jordanna, Chile
