Latin American & Hemispheric Studies
Study Abroad Opportunities
Students in the Latin American & Hemispheric Studies M.A. have a variety of options to study abroad for a semester, summer, or for other short programs as an integral part of their degree.
LAHSP students can earn up to 10 credits towards their M.A. degree while studying for a semester at Elliott School International Exchange Partners in Buenos Aires, Florianopolis (Brazil), and Ottawa (Canada) and in other locations around the world. For any of these destinations, students should plan to go abroad during their first spring semester or second fall semester in the program; study abroad during the final semester is not recommended.
Students in LAHSP can participate in GW Summer Abroad programs. LAHS often offers students an opportunity to take a one-credit field study each spring break. Past destinations have included Costa Rica and Peru. While in Peru, students attended lectures by government officials, economists and political analysts, and representatives working in the private and non-profit sectors. Students visited the legendary Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, where they explored Peru's history and learned about the country's efforts to preserve its national heritage while developing its economy. New programs are announced by GW each December.
Finally, students may participate in other accredited study abroad programs, with the permission of the Program Director.
