International Trade and Investment Policy
Intermediate Theory Requirement
Satisfying ITIP Intermediate Economics Theory Requirement
International Trade and Investment Policy (ITIP) students must complete both an intermediate micro- and macroeconomics theory course (with a B or better) before graduating from the program. Note that these courses are not required for admission to the program.
There are a number of ways to satisfy this requirem ent. Please contact the ITIP program office with questions (itip@gwu.edu or 202-994-5320)
1. Use a previously completed undergraduate course.
Students can use a course completed at the undergraduate
intermediate level to satisfy the requirement (completed within
5 years of ITIP entry with a B or better). Note that these
courses typically have titles like "Microeconomics"/ "Price
Theory" or "Macroeconomics" and should not include "Principles
of" or "Introduction to" in the title.
2. Complete a graduate course at GW.
a. Microeconomics – Students may take Econ
217 or Econ
220, either of which can be taken for ITIP credit. (Note that
Econ 220 is a two-credit course designed primarily for MBA students;
unlike Econ 217, it can be used as part of the joint MBA-MA program).
b. Macroeconomics – Students may take Econ
218 for graduate ITIP credit.
3. Pass the intermediate proficiency exams offered during the fall
Elliott School orientation.
Separate micro- and macroeconomics exams are offered during
the fall orientation for incoming graduate students.
Please note: students should ideally complete intermediate microeconomics before taking Econ 283 and intermediate macroeconomics before taking 284.
