Concentration Courses

Students select 18 hours of coursework in a concentration. While concentration courses can be selected from one or more of the concentrations listed below, they can also be selected from among other courses offered at GW or in the consortium. The individual student is expected to demonstrate that the set of courses selected have some intellectual integrity as well as some internal logic. The director is responsible for advising all IDS students, and, when necessary, will also advise students to consult with selected resource people in other departments in the university.

Sample courses are listed for concentrations in a number of traditional field (see links, below). In addition to courses offered elsewhere in the university, the IDS program schedules a number of special topics courses every semester (IAFF 238), which are relevant to various concentrations. One-credit professional skills courses (IAFF 202/203) are also a viable option for IDS students to fulfill their concentration requirements. Students are encouraged to enroll in GW courses not shown here, as well as those offered by the consortium, if appropriate.

The listings here are illustrative, and students are strongly encouraged to select courses offered elsewhere in the university as well as those offered by the consortium. The courses that follow for each concentration are listed in terms of their relevance and importance.
