U.S. Foreign Policy Colloquium

June 7-10, 2006
Washington, D.C.

A three-day program of panel discussions, lectures, site visits, and activities for graduate students from the People's Republic of China.

The June 7-10, 2006 National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University will co-sponsor a three-day colloquium on U.S. foreign policy for graduate students from the PRC. This exciting program, now in its fourth year, provides a unique opportunity for Chinese graduate students studying in the United States to explore the dynamics of American foreign policy making, past and present. Students will engage with current and former senior officials from the State Department, the National Security Council and Congress; foreign policy experts from think-tanks and academia; influential media representatives; business leaders; lobbyists and others. Students whose studies are not focused on foreign policy or international affairs are encouraged to apply.

Participants will be able to:

  • Interact with decision-makers, opinion-shapers, academics, and specialists
  • Forge new relationships with fellow PRC students from various disciplines studying at institutions across the United States
  • Attend lectures and panels on the history of foreign policy, the nuts and bolts of policy-making, the role of interest groups in the process, and the influence of public opinion and the media on policy-makers
  • Discuss Sino-American relations
  • Discuss current foreign policy issues with a senior Administration official
  • Visit influential institutions in Washington, D.C. and
  • Participate in a foreign policy simulation exercise to experience the process from an insiders' perspective.

This exciting initiative has been made possible by the generous support of the Coca-Cola Company, the FedEx Corporation, and the Anheuser-Busch Companies.
