Internships and Career Development While Abroad
Graduate students are encouraged to pursue internships while on study abroad. Elliott School graduate students are advised to begin their internship searches with the Graduate Student Career Development (GSCD), which frequently lists new opportunities, including internships abroad, on the Elliott School Career Connection.
In addition to GSCD resources, some Elliott School exchange programs, such as Ewha Womans University, actively help students seek internships during their studies. Other partners, such as Sciences Po, recommended full-time study during the fall or spring, followed by a summer internship. See the Exchange Programs web sites for more details.
Other suggestions for your continuing you career development abroad include:
- Using the Elliott School Career Connection alumni database, make a list of alumni living in your destination city. Overseas alumni are a resource for learning about particular career opportunities abroad and for obtaining job leads in the future.
- Keep a contacts notebook to track the names, organizational affiliations, addresses and emails of people that you meet. If they are working in the country, ask them how they found their jobs. You might not realize the value of a contact until after you return home when it will be harder to remember names and faces.
- Read the local newspapers and job listings. These sources can be helpful in determining with employment sectors have the greatest demand in your host country.
- Meet with GSCD before leaving the Elliott School. The GSCD staff can advise you about how to take advantage of contacts you make abroad as well as how to best market your experiences when you return.
