English Proficiency Requirements

MIPP students who are not native speakers of English and do not have a degree from a country in which English is the primary spoken language must take the TOEFL exam. Students who score below 620 on the TOEFL exam are required to take the English placement test before classes begin. The EFL placement test will be given on August 6, August 18, and August 20. To register for the test, please bring a copy of your admit letter and a $20 check to the Department of English as a Foreign Language (Academic Center, Suite 553, 202-994-7136) at least one day before the desired test date. Depending on the results of the test, you may be required to take English as a Foreign Language (ELF) courses during at least the first semester of study. These courses will not count toward your degree.
