Study Abroad
Students in the Middle East Studies program are encouraged to study abroad for a semester, summer, or for other short programs to develop overseas experience and enhance their academic studies.
Recognizing the many academic benefits of overseas study and the need of student to network with their foreign peers, the Elliott School has created exchange programs with universities around the world, including the renowned American University of Beirut, Lebanon. With this exchange program, students can earn up to 10 credits towards their M.A. degree while studying abroad in Lebanon. Because the academic calendar at AUB differs from that at GW, MES students should plan to study abroad during their first spring semester in the M.A. program.
Elliott School and MES students can also participate in GW Summer Abroad programs and other accredited study abroad programs offered by other institutions, organizations, and universities.
Students should meet with the Elliott School’s Associate Director for International Education early in their studies to outline a calendar that includes study abroad in the Middle East. The Associate Director manages all of the Elliott School exchange programs and meets one-on-one with graduate students to develop overseas options that meet their individual academic, professional, and person interests.
