Analytical Courses

Students take twelve credits of course work to strengthen their analytical skills in economics, policy analysis, research methods, and management. These courses must be completed by the end of the third semester so that students are fully prepared for the capstone project in their final semester. The economics requirement must be fulfilled during the first semester.

  1. An economics course:
    • Econ 250: Survey of Economic Development (for students with little economics background)
      Econ 295: Economics for Development (for students with a more substantial background in economics)
  2. A policy analysis course selected from the following:

      EDUC 203: Policy Issues in International Education: Developing Countries
      EMSE 220: Policy Factors in Environmental and Energy Management
      MBAD 260: Business and Public Policy
      PPOL 204/ECON 221: Economics in Policy Analysis *
      PPOL 208: Public Policy, Governance, and the Global Market System
      PSC 203: Approaches to Public Policy Analysis
      PSC 229: Politics and Public Policy
      PAD 206/PPOL 203: Policy Analysis *
      PAD 266: Environmental Policy *
      PUBH 281: Introduction: Health Policy Analysis (3 credits)
      PUBH 325: Global Health Policy and Analysis (3 credits)
      WSTU 240: Women and Public Policy

    *Non-PAD/PPOL students can register only after early registration by submitting a registration form to the SPPPA office on a first-come first-served basis.

  3. A methods course selected from the following:

    *This course is limited to IDS students and PAD/PPOL students during early registration, and open to all others on the basis of availability after early registration.

    **Requires PAD 202 or equivalent statistics and research methods course as a prerequisite.
