Internship and Career Opportunities
At GW, learning about global communication extends beyond the classroom. The vast majority of graduate students participate in internships, or work part-time or full-time while enrolled. The variety and availability of career-enhancing work opportunities is a major advantage of studying at GW. Situated just three blocks from the White House, one from the Department of State, and neighbored by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, our students obtain positions in government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations. These positions provide students with hands-on skills and practical experience, as well as a valuable network of contacts that lead to a competitive edge in the job market.
A unique feature of the Elliott School is the Graduate Student Career Development Center—designed exclusively to serve the needs of our graduate and mid-career students. In 2006-2007 the center hosted ten panels on specific career paths, 32 on-campus employer information sessions, two career fairs, and one networking seminar and reception.
The Career Development Center is also well known for organizing employer site visits. Last year groups of students visited 34 organizations to meet with alumni to discuss held annually. Using the on-line Elliott School Career Connection database over 700 employers actively post internship and job announcements, apply for internships, and advertise professional association events in the D.C. area. The center's full-time staff of four career coaches also holds individual career counseling appointments throughout the year. Click here for graduate student employment statistics.
