Internships and Employment Opportunities

With our ideal location in the nation’s capital, you will be near key public -and private-sector institutions that influence European and Eurasian policy and U.S.-European-Eurasian relations. In addition to U.S. government agencies and European embassies, these include the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European/Eurasian Community delegation, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, the Atlantic Council, and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies. Most of your classes will meet in the late afternoon or early evening, so you can pursue daytime employment or internship opportunities. And contacts you make during an internship can lead to full-time employment after graduation.

Agencies and organizations at which Elliott School students have had internships include the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the European-American Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Department of State, the Delegation of the European Commission, and TransAtlantic Futures, Inc. Two full-time staff members have been added to assist you with job placement and internships. Each semester, the School provides modest stipends on a competitive basis to currently enrolled students who participate in approved non-salaried internships.

A variety of study abroad and internship opportunities are available in Europe and Eurasia. For example, the Elliott School is now a partner with Sciences Po in Paris and has an exchange program with the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. The U.S. Department of State offers summer internships at selected embassies in Europe and Eurasia. In appropriate cases, students can earn 3 to 9 credits toward their M.A. degree in European and Eurasian Studies for study abroad.
