Master of Arts in European and Eurasian Studies

Curriculum

The multidisciplinary 40-credit hour program in European and Eurasian Studies includes:

  • A 3-credit Cornerstone on Europe and Eurasia (IAff 311);
  • A 3-credit International Economics requirement;
  • A 15-credit Core Field that provides a broad foundation for understanding the European and Eurasian regions. (The course options and distribution requirements are listed below.)
  • A 9-credit Professional Specialization Field, tailored to individual career goals. Students choose one Professional Specialization Field, selecting three courses listed under that field. Students may design their own field with the Program Director’s approval, or select one of the following fields:

  • A 1 or 2-credit Skills Workshop (IAff 201 or 202). Skills Workshops are designed to supplement substantive graduate course work with practical skills and knowledge that professionals need to perform effectively in the workplace.
  • Elective courses (5 or 6 credits).
  • A 3-credit EES Capstone Course (IAff 213), to be taken at the end of the program.
  • A language proficiency requirement in a modern European language (other than English).
  • A 6-credit thesis option.
  • Other academic programs (non-degree)

  • Certificate in European Union Studies. Students who successfully complete 15 credits in courses dealing with the European Union as part of their EES program are qualified to receive a Certificate in European Union Studies. The Certificate is offered by the American Consortium of European Union Studies (ACES), a Washington-area consortium of institutions consisting of GW, Georgetown University, George Mason University, American University and the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University. With the advice of the Program Director, students may take courses on the European Union at any of these institutions and count them as part of their 40-credit EES program at the Elliott School. Only courses specifically designated by ACES as courses on the European Union will count toward the Certificate. (Consult the Program Director or the ACES website for a listing of courses.)
  • Joint Degree Programs. Students in European and Eurasian Studies have the option of combining the M.A. degree from the Elliott School in International Affairs with the Master of Business Administration degree from the School of Business and Public Management, the Juris Doctor degree from the Law School, or the Master in Public Health degree from the School of Public Health and Health Services. Consult the Program Director or the Elliott School student advisor for details.
  • Graduate Certificates. During their course of studies for the M.A. degree in European and Eurasian Studies, or after obtaining the degree, students may obtain a Graduate Certificate in Asian studies or Latin American studies, or in a topical specialty such as international trade policy, international science and technology policy, international security policy, U.S. foreign policy or political psychology. Consult the Program Director or the Elliott School Graduate Admissions Office for details.
