Master of Arts and Master of Business Administration
Joint Degree Program

The increase of global business transactions among corporations, banks, government agencies, international organizations and consulting firms, in both the United States and abroad, has created a strong demand for well-educated professionals who can work effectively in different and continually changing international environments. The Joint International MBA-MA Program was established as a collaborative effort between the George Washington University School of Business and the Elliott School of International Affairs to prepare students for these challenges.

The Joint International MBA-MA Program enables students to combine a Master of Business Administration (MBA), with a concentration in International Business, and one of the following Master of Arts (MA) degrees from the Elliott School of International Affairs:

  • MA in International Affairs
  • MA in International Trade and Investment Policy
  • MA in Asian Studies
  • MA in European and Eurasian Studies
  • MA in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies
Students complete all the requirements for each degree program and receive two diplomas. However, the Elliott School allows students in the joint degree program to count 12 credits of International Business courses taken as part of the MBA degree toward the completion of their Master of Arts degree. The School of Business likewise allows up to 12 credits of course work completed in the MA program to be counted toward completion of the MBA degree. Thus, students can normally complete the two degrees in three years of full-time study. All requirements for both degrees must, however, be completed before either degree can be conferred.

Students must be admitted to both schools separately, and each school must approve the student's application to pursue the joint degree program. The program is open to full-time or part-time students. Admission to the joint degree program is competitive and students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain in the program.
