Elliott School of International School

A Message From Dean Michael E. Brown

The 20th century was arguably the most dynamic in history, marked by war and revolution, decolonization and democratization, weapon proliferation and economic globalization. The international arena of the 21st century promises to be equally dynamic, increasingly complex, and often quite dangerous.

The mission of the Elliott School of International Affairs is simple but profoundly important: to sponsor scholarship that advances our understanding of international problems, and to educate and train the next generation of national and international leaders.

As dean of the Elliott School, I am committed to advancing this mission and the School's position as one of the world’s best schools of international affairs. We offer our students extraordinary advantages:

  • An incomparable location in the heart of Washington, D.C., the most interesting place in the world to study international affairs
  • A faculty comprised of superb scholars and scholar-practitioners
  • World-renowned research centers on the cutting edge of scholarship
  • A truly interdisciplinary, liberal arts undergraduate program that draws on the study of anthropology, culture, economics, history, languages, political science, science and technology
  • Graduate programs that combine an academic foundation with a professional orientation, including an unmatched program of professional skills courses
  • Partnerships with leading universities from around the world, making the Elliott School the hub of a global academic network
  • A stunning new building with state-of-the-art facilities

The international problems of the 21st century are not just intellectually challenging: they affect the lives and well-being of billions of people around the world. The Elliott School, I believe, will help to make a troubled world a better place. I hope you will join us.

Michael E. Brown
