Over the past year, the E&EM program was fortunate to receive a visit by Elena Emelyanova, a visiting scholar from Russia.  Elena, who took our EMSE 225 Hazardous Waste Management course in the summer 2000 semester and worked with E&EM students and faculty in other ways, was participating in the U.S. State Department's Junior Faculty Development  Program.  Her mentor during the program was School of Business and Public Management Associate Professor  Mark Starik, who worked with her on several strategic environmental management projects.

On Tuesday, June 27, 2000, Elena received her certificate of graduation from the State Department.  On July 5, 2000, Elena participated in an environmental education video conference at GW, with a dozen leading environmental education scholars, administrators, and government officials located in Moscow.  Professor Emelyanova provided a  comparison between U.S. and Russian environmental education approaches.  Professor Starik also participated in the event, discussing the goals and programs of the GW Center for  Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management and the World Resources  Institute's Business Environment and Learning Leadership program.

Professor Larry Hourcle of the GW Institute for the Environment arranged the  video conference and also participated, focusing his comments on U.S. environmental education policy.
