Two EEM Alumni Renewable Energy Books Published in Spring Semester

The Spring 2013 semester witnessed the arrival of two major renewable energy publications authored by recent EEM graduates Dr. Elvin Yuzugullu and Dr. Kristin Deason.

."Synergies for Sustainable Energy"

Elvin's new book "Synergies for Sustainable Energy" provides s a one-stop volume that addresses the complete range of clean energy technologies and associated issues. The book highlights synergistic opportunities, showing how energy efforts in different sectors can be integrated to leverage each one's strength. It explains what these opportunities mean at local, regional, and global scales, and learn how different stakeholder priorities can be managed.

The book provides a global snapshot of critical energy considerations, including the status of resources, consumption trends, and technology development and explains how these factors are effected by related social, political, and environmental issues. The reader is guided through each of the various clean energy technologies, gaining knowledge of important facts, technology basics, key players, markets, relevant analyses and results, and challenges and opportunities. This reference book provides practical tools to aid in decision-making efforts and case studies that provide a real-world perspective.

Dr. Elvin Yüzügüllü presently is a senior member at SRA International, Inc. in Bethesda, MD and has extensive experience working for the U.S. Department of Energy s Fuel Cell Technologies Program. .She also is and Associate Professorial Lecturer in the EEM program, teaching the Energy Management course.

.“Demonstration Projects and Market Introduction”

Kristin authored a 32-page chapter entitled Demonstration Projects and Market Introduction in the new renewable energy book Fuel Cell Science and Engineering: Materials, Processes, Systems and Technology. Chapter, Kristin discusses why demonstration projects are so important for the commercialization of emerging renewable technologies, the impact of transportation demonstrations and the importance of stationary power and early market applications.

Fuel cells are expected to play a major role in the future power supply that will transform to renewable, decentralized and fluctuating primary energies. At the same time the share of electric power will continually increase at the expense of thermal and mechanical energy not just in transportation, but also in households. Hydrogen as a perfect fuel for fuel cells and an outstanding and efficient means of bulk storage for renewable energy will spearhead this development together with fuel cells. Moreover, small fuel cells hold great potential for portable devices such as gadgets and medical applications such as pacemakers.

The book explores specific fuel cells within and beyond the mainstream development and focuses on materials and production processes for both SOFC and low temperature fuel cells, analytics and diagnostics for fuel cells, modeling and simulation as well as balance of plant design and components. As fuel cells are getting increasingly sophisticated and industrially developed the issues of quality assurance and methodology of development are included in this book.
