Sugawara Michizane (845-903) was a poet and scholar of early Heian Japan, who was unjustly exiled to Dazaifu. He is now considered the patron saint of learning in Japan under the name Tenmangu. Let's hope that this classical figure will provide aid and comfort to Japanese teachers as well as its learners.

Keynote Speaker
This year's keynote speaker was Professor Sonja Arntzen from the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. She presented a lecture and conducted a workshop based on her article, "Old Pond, Students Leap In, Sound of Laughter" in a recent issue of Japanese Language and Literature, from the Association of Japanese Teachers. "This lecture will suggest a mode of introducing students at all levels to the history and forms of Japanese poetry through the use of creative activities. The workshop that follows the next day will demonstrate the use of linked verse composition as a classroom activity."

The Mid-Atlantic Japanese Pedagogy Workshop
The workshop-formerly the Virginia Japanese Pedagogy Workshop initiated by Professor Ken'ichi Ujiie of Washington and Lee University-is an annual meeting focusing on issues concerning Japanese language instruction from kindergarten to university levels for teachers from the Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland areas.
